The demo is focused on carrier battles - that means surface combat, while is there, is anything but detailed. Developers have stated already that what's in there is just the ships firing and nothing like what the finished product will look like - the full version will have ship to ship combat exactly like what you're describing.
As for easy to access, hard to master, honestly, it is that way. Things are easy to set up, now, setting them properly to get good results needs a lot of thinking and a good knowledge of WW2 naval, carrier, and air operations to get good results - which is pretty much the point as even while I've played almost every strategy game there has been about the carrier battles of the pacific...
None comes close to match how detailed the modelling of the carrier operations are in this game.
