I support this. In the scenario I had two spotter planes identify the Japanese carriers and proceed on their search pattern. Both got shot down as they continued to fly over the carriers.
Maybe give them a menu of things to look for or behaviors to follow upon spotting something? I can see this adding some extra complexity to scenario design too, suppose your spotter sees surface ships but you gave it a "RTB upon spotting something" and it doesn't stay on station long enough to ID composition so you send your entire strike package to attack a couple of cruisers but the Japanese carriers were somewhere else and you missed them.
Had something similar happen to me, my strike returned to where my carriers were supposed to be when they launched but I had changed course after takeoff. They eventually made it back, but it was silly to see them fly past my Task Force to their waypoint, realize the carriers weren't there, and then correct themselves. There's a case to be made that these types of things actually happened, but between radio comms and visual identification I'd think the air wing would realize they just flew past their carriers on the way to the planned waypoint.
*otherwise thanks anyway for the demo I love it
Thank you for scratching my "WW2 Pacific Naval Strategy" itch. I have been dying to play something like this for so long and your execution could not be more perfect. The mission list looks amazing and I absolutely cannot wait for the full release. This is definitely my #1 most looked forward to game of 2025.
