Well, it's always possible to have a campaign starting earlier or to have an unrealistic campaign or even just the models for custom battles.
I think many people love this game and they just want it to be the ultimate WW2 sea operations game.
Lexington and Yorktown are in the game because they share models with Saratoga and Enterprise/Hornet respectively, which means almost no extra effort.
Like seriously, start a new campaign and yorktown is marked with a big ugly (U) to indicate it's unusable in the unit list for the yorktown class.
