War on the Sea

American Torpedo RNG
I have been playing through the American campaign and I am being severely hampered by the terrible RNG of American Dud torpedoes. I would easily be dominating the map with higher number of command points. If a IJN CA eats 6 torpedoes, 3 out of the 6 will end up being duds.

The difference between 6 hits and 3 hits is half the IJN navy being damaged but still operational and it is highly frustrating.

Yeah I had to turn duds off. Seemed like the percentage was awfully high. Might reflect RW performance but I couldn't deal with it.

How did you turn them off? Is there a setting in-game?

It is under options (bottom left)

If anything the dud rate for the Mk. 14 in the game is HALF of what it should be. I can understand how that'd be frustrating for the player, but I'm glad that it's modeled with an option to turn it off.

Separately, the USN has such a pronounced advantage in gunnery that I'm a little surprised that torpedo failures have caused you headaches. They'll cripple your submarine effectiveness, to be sure, but USN surface ships don't really depend on torpedoes.

There is a reason that in most of the battles in the Pacific the US didn't rely on torps. The dive bomber and actually having radar on their ships is what the US used to win battles. Japanese torpedos were a lot better than American ones.

This is literally US torpedoes '41-late '43 in a nutshell, get used to it.

In 1942, torpedo dud % was around 80% chance of malfunction, either not detonating when it hit, or not simply running properly. Even by the end of hostilities in August 1945, the % chance of malfunction was around 45%...
It's frustrating but it is true to life. The Mk XIV and XV torpedoes were notoriously unreliable, and the air-launched versions were even worse, most tending to not run at all or else breaking in two when dropped.

The air launched torpedo from what I've heard, at the end of the war was a massive improvement to what it was earlier in the war. Also, what sources say that the Mk.14 and Mk. 15 had 45% dud rate by the end of the war. I can understand the Mk. 18 though.
