How do you manually fire star shells?
For some reason the Japanese DDs are very.... let's say, brave.
They pit 4 DDs against my 2DD 2BB fleet 2 times a night and were attacking actively.
since one of them is damaged and pulling smoke, I can't spot them so I wanted to fire star shell, but when I try to fire it manually It seems to be actually firing HEs.

In the end I had to retreat and wait until next morning when my carrier planes send them to the bottom.

Huh, the ship in question must not have any starshells.

Oh... now that you mentioned... yeah, Battleship main gun probably doesn't.

If anyone says that they fire HE instead of AP or SS and complain about it, then 1) they're blind if they checked the ammo storage, 2) The gun in question doesn't HAVE any of that ammo.

It's a bit misleading, you know.
When you set the ammo to SS, the turret icon does change to SS, but when you click "fire" it just goes back to HE.

That's called "Hold" fire, it always does that.

no it has nothing to do with hold fire, I'm not talking about turret rotation
It's the turret icon on the weapon panel.

I never had that happen to me.

You should be able to select star shells, click the manual button, choose where you wish to fire, and then click "fire". For some ships with a mix of secondary guns (like the Kongos), only one type of gun has star shells. Ordering the whole battery to fire will have the star shell capable guns fire those and the rest fire HE.

The 127mm guns of Kongo has star shells, the 152mm casemates don't.
