If you've got another ship ahead of it you could probably best do Echelon Right or left depending on which way the target is going relative to your approach, that way you don't waste any fish shooting behind the target and can even hit the ship ahead of it if you're lucky. I wouldn't risk that on a lone ship however, as I've found that they can slow down pretty quickly and I actually overshot some of them that way.
For lone ships Best is either line abreast or Vic formation.
Funnily enough I've found them to be more accurate when keeping them in formation, at least in smaller groups of 3-4.
