War on the Sea

Armour Quality
How can I find out what quality of armor is on a ship in this game?

It’s in the last unit info box, you can see armour in mm thickness of the unit.

That's armour thickness, not armour quality.

armour quality varies from ship to ship depending on who made the armour. even 2 ships in the same class made at the same shipyard might have diff quality armour.
As the war went on armour got better or worse depending on how much resources the country had to use.
Thickness might of gone up but the quality got worse so less effective.
Bit like the M1A1 tank thicker armour than the challenger 2 but far less quality so less effective.
WWII Sherman US 1 had the same armour as the British firefly version but the firefly had better quality armour.

It's not about the difference in the quality of armor of the same class, it's impossible to simulate it in the game. As far as I understand question AWtruo127, the point is whether the game simulates the presence of the armor classes themselves that were used to book different parts of the ship. I am also interested in how the calculation of armor penetration occurs in this game. https://eugeneleeslover.com/ARMOR-CHAPTER-XII-B.html

The armour in game can anyone describe how it works eg the damage model is split in 2, top part has funnels, turrets etc etc, the second has lots of compartments now when you hover over them the majority are all 0 I take it that’s zero armour if so does that mean there is no armoured decks?

If you look at the unit files, armour is represented in 3 values, X, Y and Z. Which I think represents the armour value of the component from different angles. Not 100 percent sure.

Weapons penetration seems be represented by caliber.

I only just started looking at modding the files and creating my mod dictionary so not 100% sure yet.

Quality could be represented by effective thickness in mm as opposed to actual thickness with a different value to represent quality of the armour I guess.

Yes I’ve seen those x y z I see X on magazines is larger but it some sort of factor calculation but surely a BB every X would have a value to represent an armoured deck?? Eg general compartments seem to be 0

I think X changes H:mm and Z V:mm Y I’m not sure 🤔

From north_carolina_data.txt
"armorParams":{"x":324.0,"y":1.2,"z":180.0,"w":0.0}

x = belt thickness in mm
y = armor bonus due to slope of belt
z = deck thickness in mm
w = armor bonus due to slope of deck

So north carolina has an effective belt armor thickness of 389mm.

Armor (steel) quality is not modeled, although thickness values do take into account STS plating behind main armor where applicable.

Thank you 👍🏻 So it’s x * y = armour thickness and Z is just ALL compartments that don’t have a Magazine,Engineering propellers etc etc

how do you work out the Real Life armour into the games armour Eg Kongo deck armour is 25mm (1inch)

Sure hope it can come to the game one way or another.

If you really want check drachinifel video about the armor:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoEFjl0buiM

Take notes when he mentions about the armor quality for each nation in a specific era.
So as an example, lets say the americans used krupp 5 quality and the japanese is Krupp 4. Now go to each jpn ship and change the value in armor in the data.txt to simulate what would be Krupp 4 in comparison with Krupp 5 ( i am using UAD terms here )

So as example to make it easier to understand. Let's say the one japanese ship section have 100mm. If drachinifel says it would be something around 90% quality in comparison with best made in that era ( if i remember it was the germans and the british who had the best quality armor at the time ) then replace the 100m for 90mm.

Now repeat this step for each cell with armor and for each jpn ship.

Well, I would like to keep seeing the original armour thickness, with the quality of armor being listed somewhere in the ship identification and classification booklet.

If you are not willing to edit the ship cells data to reflect the quality armor then is irrelevant to have that information in game since it would only bring confusion to the players.
