US TORPEDO STRUGGLE
Allright Folks. I know historically, the US had a major problem with its torpedos at the beginning of the war, with a lot of them not going off when hitting. STILL. STILL. does this mean I have to suffer through watching a perfect all 6 torpedo strike on a heavy cruiser and 5 OF THEM ARE DUDS??? (not angry, just frustrated. mainly because this is a very common occurrence. not to that extent, but I notice when my torpedoes connect theres a 60 to 70 percent chance they are duds, whereas the enemy gets good hits almost 80 percent of the time.

That's the difference between American and Japanese torpedoes in the game. When playing the Americans I fully expect half of my torpedo hits to be duds. And since (I believe) the game accounts for the torpedoes individually then there will be those rare moments when even every single one in a spread will be a dud. It's just a question of probabilities. I'm sure if you had five good hits out of six you wouldn't even notice. If this is a frustrating issue for you then try the Japanese side. There duds are actually rarer I believe than 20%.

Having issues myself with duds, when I am lucky enough to score hits.
Also missing a lot of shots.
Have just fired 4+4 torps aft and forward bays, target Takao, 1900yds, 82% sol, 1 and 2 degrees spread, -7 angle. All torpedoes missed. How can I improve this?

answer on this is yes. Us subs did go out , hit ships all their torpedo's , only for not one to work. If you search the threads on this forum you will find a documentary on the subject, there was not one problem with the US torpedo, but several and it wan't until late 44 that they was all addressed. The problem was due to politics and budget constrains they had not even tested one. As for the IJN torpedoes, these were years ahead of any allied torpedo, they had been tested and developed to be a key weapon of their navy. Interesting question on the few Royal Navel ships with Torpedoes, if they was not using US ones they should be far better than the US ones.

Is the royal navy going to be a playable faction at all?

There are a few Ships in the game already.

Yes, it is frustrating when you playing as American when you score multiple hits with torpedoes, and none of them go off. However, that mirrors the frustration of the US sailors and air crews who had to face this in real-life. However, the silver lining in the cloud is that US destroyers are extremely good in any surface battles where guns are involved. So good in fact, that they can win against Japanese light cruisers, provided of course that they don't get torpedoed first!!

For my part it's a feature I love. Gives an idea of the hardships the US faced during the early part of the Pacific war. One can only imagine the frustration a submarine commander endured when spending hours if not days to achieve a perfect position to strike a group of ships only to have all the torpedoes bounce off harmlessly or pass right underneath the target with no effect.

The German U-boats had similar problems with their magnetic detonators and depth-keeping, also having torpedoes pass under their targets and fail to detonate, or worse, detonate prematurely, not only failing to hit the target but alerting the enemy of their presence as well.

Do keep in mind that War on the Sea is easily modified.
If there is an aspect of the game you wish to tweak, make "more historical" or more "fun" it can by done by editing the various text files. In this case:

default/ammunition/torpedo_XXX.txt and change the "dudRate":0.35 value.

See this thread about making text edits permanent across game updates:

The actual US torpedo dud rate has been estimated to have been over 80% during the early years of WWII.

Don't worry the USN has plenty of other ways of obliterating the IJN

Or you can just toggle off duds in the option screen

Looool I know brother, and I keep thinking that every time it happens. I think one time i just straight up yelled "THIS IS WHAT THEY HAD TO F****** DEAL WITH????" and my mate outside my window started laughing. and I've noticed that with the destroyers, they absolutely slaughter

Thank you!! but I'm probably going to keep it as is, especially since its so accurate. :D Love the game, so thank you a ton. can't wait to see where it goes! also is the commonwealth going to have a campaign to itself at some point? or are they just going to be involved with the US

I agree, the accuracy is amazing, its just.............. sooooooooooo irritating XD but it shows how much research the devs put in their game.

One thing you may want to try is shooting so that the torpedoes don't hit at a straight 90-degree angle, but at an angle of from ~80 to ~45 degrees. That seems to give me fewer dud results, though I can't really say if it's from better odds or just better luck.
