Falling Frontier

Falling Frontier

3 D space or 2D space combat?
Can't tell it appears 2D with some depth but only visually not operating in 3 dimensions.

Homeworld for example, it's of course an RTS but its very tactical in its execution. Games are incredibly challenging to make. Usually rabbit hole after rabbit hole and there's a lot of technical challenges to a fully 3D expansive RTS. Certainly not impossible by any means. But not something I wanted to tackle for Falling Frontier. Maybe the 2nd game further down the line ;)

You only move your ships in a single plane as far as I'm concerned.
Guess the game fell for this:

I see nothing wrong tho.

When it comes to RTS in space, 2D often serves the strategy-part of gameplay much better than actual 3D would because you can actually work with the map and set up chokepoints and so on.

On a 3D-plane, defenselines, chokepoints and whatnot are often easily avoided, leading to limited options for counterplay. It may be more immersive since it's space, but gameplaywise it usually ends up pretty bad.
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Will I leave X4 for this? It looks very interesting, 3d or 2d on wishlist, following, hope it sells well.

Not sure the '3D' for the sake of '3D' unplayability.

But what's been shown works greatly for a tactical strategy space game - the slow mo is a winner !

f you watch the video and you listen and read about the feature that the game will have. What does it really matter if she ships just move on 2 Dimensions and not 3?
In most games of this type it's 2D or they move in 2D or it doesn't even matter because you can't give your ships more orders than to attack or withdraw.
Some of you mentioned Homeworld. Yes it is a great game and yes the ships move in 3 Dimensions, but you always play on 1 map. No switching between stary systems or planets. no colonization no Star Bases, just you and your fleet (more the idea of a Battle Star Galactica Scenario, than a 4x game,I would say)
So don't compare apples with oranges. I think we will get a very great space RTS game here.

2D games live longer. 2D with 3D elements are eternal (SotSE:R). I hope explanations are not needed...

You mean Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion?
Good game, but also a good example for one of those games where ships might move in 3 Dimensions, but it doesn't really mtatter that they do, because it does not give the game any strategic depth. And for most of the time you don't even zoom in that close to realize that they do, because you need a bigger overview of the action.
The only game I can recall where it matters is Homeworld and that's not even a 4x game.
And if you example would fit, why are people still mentioning Master of Orion 2? The game all together was 2D. Graphics and ship movement! ;-)

It looks like your PC can't support close engagements in Sins. Mine can and this is why I know that moving in 3D space is the AI's plan for escape 9 of 10 times. Yet I do move manualy my units in the same manner, but for a more shady purpose.

Homeworld is overcomplicated for most to play. Back then it took me months to learn it, let alone do the story without cheats.

MoO2 is an entirelly different game type.

1. Zooming out to have a better overview of the action/battle/wahtever goes on. Has nothing to do with what you PC is able or unable to handle. IDK how you jump on such a conclusion?
And by the way, most people who play RTS games spend more time on a zommed out view than they zoom in to enjoy the graphics.
Some games are better suited to enjoy "panorama views". Anno 1800, for example.
I play the same game as you do. Never had an issue of an escaping enemy because they move in 3D. As I mentioned above, I play zoomed out, most of the time, so I see what is going on. And the enemy can move in 2D or 3D and try to escape, I just catch him before he can, if I have enough/the propper ships.

2. So you ask for 3D Shipmovement and Homeworld was overcomplicated for you? OMG...

3. Master of Orion 2 is the same Genre as this. It's a 4x game.
