EDIT: At least I think so
Guess the game fell for this:

I see nothing wrong tho.
On a 3D-plane, defenselines, chokepoints and whatnot are often easily avoided, leading to limited options for counterplay. It may be more immersive since it's space, but gameplaywise it usually ends up pretty bad.
But what's been shown works greatly for a tactical strategy space game - the slow mo is a winner !
In most games of this type it's 2D or they move in 2D or it doesn't even matter because you can't give your ships more orders than to attack or withdraw.
Some of you mentioned Homeworld. Yes it is a great game and yes the ships move in 3 Dimensions, but you always play on 1 map. No switching between stary systems or planets. no colonization no Star Bases, just you and your fleet (more the idea of a Battle Star Galactica Scenario, than a 4x game,I would say)
So don't compare apples with oranges. I think we will get a very great space RTS game here.
Good game, but also a good example for one of those games where ships might move in 3 Dimensions, but it doesn't really mtatter that they do, because it does not give the game any strategic depth. And for most of the time you don't even zoom in that close to realize that they do, because you need a bigger overview of the action.
The only game I can recall where it matters is Homeworld and that's not even a 4x game.
And if you example would fit, why are people still mentioning Master of Orion 2? The game all together was 2D. Graphics and ship movement! ;-)
Homeworld is overcomplicated for most to play. Back then it took me months to learn it, let alone do the story without cheats.
MoO2 is an entirelly different game type.
And by the way, most people who play RTS games spend more time on a zommed out view than they zoom in to enjoy the graphics.
Some games are better suited to enjoy "panorama views". Anno 1800, for example.
I play the same game as you do. Never had an issue of an escaping enemy because they move in 3D. As I mentioned above, I play zoomed out, most of the time, so I see what is going on. And the enemy can move in 2D or 3D and try to escape, I just catch him before he can, if I have enough/the propper ships.
2. So you ask for 3D Shipmovement and Homeworld was overcomplicated for you? OMG...
3. Master of Orion 2 is the same Genre as this. It's a 4x game.
