I tried it some months ago, I even made a friend buy the game just to coop. I played with the graphic enhancer mod (FUEL: refueled). if you still want to try, I'll be there (if I can)

Does it actually work? I couldn't get it to work with gfwl when I tried, couldn't see anybody in free roam. I could see the games created by other players, but could not join them.

Alright, so... I bought 2 steam keys, installed on 2 computers from steam (different accounts), I can login to different gfwl accounts on each computer. They tell me the other one is logged in (I made them friends), they can see the lobby created by the other. But I get a "network error" when they try to join. As mentioned above, can't see one another in the free roam.

I used to have the same error, it solved automatically. If you don't care about the online, download xliv.eless (the dot is to avoid censure), there are a .ddl and a .ini file that you put in the game directory and they disable gfwl. You can play just in single player, and if you start using gfwl you loose your old save

I'll try wiping out the gfwl and reinstalling, I'll also try to install on Windows 8 (the comps I installed on are XP based). And I will post back to document and inform others that might face the same problem.

My question is: have any of you actually played with others online recently? Because if it wasn't for the fact that I tested free roam online with 2 comps that are side by side, and made a race lobby, I wouldn't know about this issue and would just assume there's no one in free ride.

Of course if anyone else faced this "network error" when trying to join a race, I'd like to know if you managed to fix it, and if so, how.

Reporting back and can confirm that online multiplayer still worked as of yesterday (Aug 29 2015).

If any one is getting "network error" when trying to join a game, try deleting this key in your registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\XLive | PCID

It seems that the registry entries don't get deleted when you uninstall GFWL.

Also, if you're starting from scratch, make sure you download the latest GFWL client, the one that comes with the game is buggy and gave me some problems when trying to login using the LIVE id.

Both the game (the key verification thing) and GFWL will ask for your cd key (not your steam key) but the steam setup is really nice in that it gives you that key right up front and there's a button to copy it.
