You can get far more complicated than that, however.
Okay but... you're using a Gear Shift 3, which is the part they're trying to unlock... so they can't build that.
The games pretty smart overall. if you build a pair of 2 gear gearboxes and connect the output of one to the input of the other and then the output of the second one to your wheels it will work fine.

Wrapping around like this may seem wasteful, but I find it affords me better control over which ratios make it into the gearbox. I've taken basically this same format and made 4 and 5 speed gearboxes without much trouble. It just depends on whether I want to lean into acceleration or top speed and how much horsepower I'm working with. Plus it's nice being able to just stick the drive shaft right in the middle underneath if I wanna do 4WD.
