cause as far as i have seen the game just checks the various gearings and picks whatever gives the highest torque at that RPM. So ff you have 3 shifters then there are indeed 8 possible gearings to choose from - just most likely you have the same 1.6:1 in the system twice so it will only result in 5 actually diferent ratios.
I also found one of the ways the gearing can be broken: If the "first" gear is not the slowest ration, it creates problems with two gear boxes and the gearing.
The gearing with multiple gear shifters also sometimes creates two gears with the same, or mostly the same gear ratio.
But because 4th is the same as second, it skips it most of the time.
So 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 5 (3)
The ratio is rather unrelated, it just feels like the gears don't get the same ratio as they visually (by tooth count) should.
