i know of three.
theres a "general chat" located on the chat interface hover and click on it to make it visible in the chat
theres also an "NPC" chat this is used to communicate with npcs i will note if you been lorehounding you can say things to them for other resoponse or ask certain npcs certain things at certain times. another example is the curreny exhange. the guy only says they exchange only upto 5 silver. but you can type 6 or 12 or w,e and he'll do the math.
theres also a "game" chat. this chat shows you all game things going on exp earned objects examined things picked up i think stuff like that.
i have yet to PM, Inbox people. but i think the "friend" chat your looking for is built into the mail system. ie: your going to have to send your friends ingame snail mail if you want to talk to them. privately anyways.
