Quite easily... While certain characters return, the story of the first game was rather self-contained.

They don't even bring back the main character of the first game.

if you don't want to miss out from the first game I recommend you watch the anime then cause that literally gives out the story line of the whole 1st game the anime's called "monster hunter stories ride on"

What is funny is that later on they updated Monster Hunter Stories to have more content from the anime.
I rather you play the first game than to watch the anime. The anime was decent but nothing compared to the mobile/3DS game.

You don't have to if you wanted to be surprised, as the second game will be its own story. But shared the same lore with the first game and other MH games.

Yeah, sadly the US and EU got screwed in that department since they didn't support it anymore at that point. You can still fight stuff like Rajang, Kushala, Teostra, etc but not actually use them yourself like the Japanese version can.

no you cant. upon purchase of this game you need to send a screen shot in to capcom with the end credits of the first game and you standing in front of the screen with a dated news paper. then they will send you a code to enter the new game after you pay for and download it.

I will also say... Monster Hunter Stories 2 is pretty much a COMPLETE rehash of Monster Hunter Stories.

The only difference is that they change your partner monster from "Possibly being the savior" to "Possibly being the devil"

So trust me when I say you are missing NOTHING.

I'm curious and will probably get soem information on this, but I admit in the end I thought the first one was kind of boring.
I guess it was just not as exciting as I hoped for.
Either that or I was just not in the right mood when finishing the game.

I'm intrigued by the game because I like the world of monster hunter but I can't <gameplay> to save my life. So, turn-based battles? Yes please.

Anywhere that I can read more about the first game's story?

There should be a ton of summarizing videos close to launch.

Or you bingewatch through the anime. There's still time left.

But generally? It's a different story with a different cast of characters (besides annoying Navirou). Worst thing you encounter will be references to Stories 1. But the game will tell you everything important anyway.

Not just Navirou... two other characters from the first game are confirmed to be in the second.
