They don't even bring back the main character of the first game.
What is funny is that later on they updated Monster Hunter Stories to have more content from the anime.
You don't have to if you wanted to be surprised, as the second game will be its own story. But shared the same lore with the first game and other MH games.
The US never got update 1.2 : (
The only difference is that they change your partner monster from "Possibly being the savior" to "Possibly being the devil"
So trust me when I say you are missing NOTHING.
I guess it was just not as exciting as I hoped for.
Either that or I was just not in the right mood when finishing the game.
Anywhere that I can read more about the first game's story?
There should be a ton of summarizing videos close to launch.
Or you bingewatch through the anime. There's still time left.
But generally? It's a different story with a different cast of characters (besides annoying Navirou). Worst thing you encounter will be references to Stories 1. But the game will tell you everything important anyway.
