the meaning of 99 (in my opinion)

I think it's a reference to the 2000 glitch and here are some proofs :

- Classic Baldi's Basics is happening in 1999
- 99 seems to be in this universe the symbol of chaos, corruption and unstability
- birthday bash happens a year later in 2000 and Filename 2 tells you that terrible will happen to you and the school is getting filled with red spoop balloons wich could be coming from the 2000 glitch. Then, by thinking with The Freedom Traveler's theory that says that Baldi and friends went to a new school and by adding my thoughts, I conclude that they ran away from the 2000 glitch and the new ending (plus the 99's everywhere) could be the glitch that is still chasing them.

that's what vava meant by the "2000 glitch" but anyways it'd be sorta hilarious if literally the main reason the game glitches out is the Y2K bug because that related to the system clock in computers- which implies that although there's currently no known reason for Baldi's Basics to even use the system clock, it was programmed to anyways and just got absolutely wrecked as a result

and I mean I guess it would make sense that if it used the system clock it would still be vulnerable, because although most systems had a patch put out to avoid the issue entirely come the year 2000, some systems/programs didn't... and games in particular were hard to get patches out for because unless they were shareware, they probably came in a physical copy and you couldn't just easily update a physical game

but, on the one hand systems that didn't get the update didn't really get destroyed either. they maybe had funny little bugs where it said some year far into the past because the value rolled over to its earliest possible value... on the other hand I just remembered that one post about someone trying to order a nothing burger from McD on one of those fancy screens and it just corrupting the bootloader somehow (pic of the post[i.redd.it], warning for swears if you don't like them) so programs can definitely act weird if something unexpected happens :p

The theory with the 2000 glitch would makes much sense.Also remember that in the birthday bash ending where like over million glitch baldis came to you,a corrupted image of the backer baldi with the text -000 on it appeared on the most walls.So it could be just true,that the story is about the 2000 glitch and maybe (I know this doesn't make sense) that 99 thing or baldi fears the coming glitch and so he is chasing you and,wait.In the third floor you have to collect 9/9 notebooks.So imagine at the ending after some seconds when baldi sang, the 2000 year started and so everything got corrupted.That would mean,that it would be night when you are in floor 3 and if you are winning,the new year is beginning.But I am not so sure with my theories.

filename2 was trying really hard to get the player's attention and tell them to delete the game specifically and never come back in the original version, after all. even seemed pretty upset if you found him again in Birthday Bash (ofc, this doesn't mean much of anything for the future in terms of lore. maybe something similar will be used again, maybe it'll be a completely different idea, or maybe there really won't be any discernible lore at all)


I mean, I personally don't really believe in this theory either (although I did find the implications funny), but that's the thing- it's a theory, just a little "what if?" scenario. no harm, no foul... unless ofc people were going "this is absolutely what it is and any other theories are wrong and you're wrong" etc etc.. in which case, yeah that's pretty obnoxious
