[SOLVED] GRID stuttering/lag
Hey! So, i bought GRID in this Summer Sales, and i have the computer specs to run this game on max (on low specs the stutter persists), but i keep getting a minor stutter in the game, like, it slows down a bit and then accelerates. What is happening to me is equal to what is happening in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn4TNvXB52g

I've been looking on the net for a fix, and i've found and done the fix they told me, but everything is the same. The fix they told me is this:

"
3# Frame Skips, Low FPS, Lag
PC version of the game may be experiencing all this due to a massive replay file, too much data writing occurs on that file causing the lag and frame skips, when you go back to the game after having watched a replay.
You can find the file here. You have to show hidden files and folders first.

C:\ProgramData\Codemasters\FormulaOne\DataCache\Administrator\replay replay.pbf

You can set the replay.pbf file to read only and see if that helps. Or you can try the workaround below.

Windows Vista/Windows 7 Thanks @n1x1n for the suggestion.

1. Delete original replay folder (and file) by exploring to

ProgramData\Codemasters\FormulaOne\DataCache\yourc omputersname\

2. Open Command Prompt with admin privileges (search ‘cmd’ and right click on cmd.exe and select ‘Run as Administrator’)

3. Use mklink to create the symbolic link. Edit it according to your own game directory location.

mklink /D C:\ProgramData\Codemasters\FormulaOne\DataCache\yourcomputersname\ E:\Games\F12010\replay

4. When launching the game, the 2GB replay.pbf file will be written to the file location you have specified. If you write this file to another hard drive, resources are freed up for your OS and game performance will increase."

This fix is for F1, a game of codemasters, but it's the same. They have the same problem.
Well, insted of using mklink i used a program for that called DirLinker, and put a link on my folder "yourcomputersname" to my other partition of the harddrive that only have movies and music to a folder called GRID. Like a guy said:
"Open dirlinker and you will see 2 text boxes: In link location key in the path where your replay file was being recorded to (ie the path in 1)). In the 'link to' box key in the location where you would like to record your replay files in future. Obviously this will need to be your additional drive. In my case I went for E:\F12010. Then click Go! et voila - all your replay files will be recorded to the new location on your external harddrive, so taking all the pressure off your main operating system/gameplaying drive. All my stuttering has completely gone and I can now enjoy this utterly average game without missing a beat!"

And everything is working like is supposed to, the replay.pbf that has 1.95 Gb is being created in my other partition, but still is making that stutter. Please help, i've been searching and searching for a solution and i can't find anything that works!

I found a solution!!! I haven't got any stuttering now! Well, i only got two stutters on 5 races played, so for me it's very good :) This is not a fix, it's actually a work around the problem. I made two changes before the stutters stopped.

First, assuming that you tried the fix i gave here, i went to my new folder GRID, on the other partition of my drive, which have the file replay.pbf (the file had 1.95 Gb), i deleted it and made a new txt file with the same name, but i changed the extension from txt to replay.pbf, then, this new file that has 0 bytes i put it read only. This was the first change.

The second change i made was: Go to My Documents > Codemasters > GRID > hardwaresettings , edit the file hardware_settings_config.xml and change fullscreen="true" to fullscreen="false".

That's everything i did and the stutters have stopped for now :) I would recommend you to make my second change first, because i've only seen improvement after i took off the fullscreen, if that isn't enough, try the other :)

Best regards

I only get small freezes in GRID when I use the hood cam, all other cam modes don't have this issue.
GRID2, F2010 and F2012 runs flawless regardless no matter which cam mode I select.

I have had grid start stuttering (about every 5 seconds it slows dramatically for an instant and then back to normal . Stutters every 5 seconds). I tried all setting to low and turned off everything in the game that could slow it down. Still stuttered with no change.
I remembered that there had been a graphics driver update (Nvidia) with an update to the GEforce Experience. So I did: start, run, msconfig. In msconfig went to services. Turned off everything to do with Nvidia and itunes updates. Re-booted.. The game was then back to normal with no stuttering when overclocked and on maximum everything. (some other programs running better as well now). Looks like it might have been the Nvidia or itunes updater stuff causing the stutter?

Thank you for making this thread.

This works PERFECTLY with my RAM Disk. Thanks!

I highly recommend anyone with enough memory do the same.
can you tell if this works in non-steam?

I think so, when I saw this, it was from people outside steam. It is a problem with the game, not steam.

thanks a lot!! I had the same problem, even worst with 2-3 seconds of lag and my car crashed somewhere out of the track. I only took off fullscreen and now the game seems run perfectly; i would have been really upset if i could not fix it since i'm only few races from finishing my career XD
