I posted this because of how many times I saw responses of "Mmmmm it's a secret" when people asked how to do so. I assume most of the users are no longer in elementary, so I hope they start to act like it.
You can use unicode characters to make them italics, this bypasses the need for tags like the color codes. This[www.w3.org] table lists quite a few of them, though there are also several converter tools available online to automate the text for you.
