Creating a "Well-Rounded" Character vs. Min-Maxing.
So far (I'm around 12 or 13), I find myself making decisions with the goal of maxing out a particular skill (More or less automatically picking the decisions that will raise my ingenuity, for example), because (at least so far) all the goals they give you at the beginning of a chapter seem to require a single stat > or = 4, for example, so it seems to make sense to play this way. For one, part of me doesn't even want to look at the chapter goals as they kind of spoil the story and encourage the kind of play style I was just describing. But if there are 3 separate goal possibilities that all require a 4 and I play the "well rounded" route and finish a chapter with multiple stats in the 2-3 range, I find myself in the possible position of not accomplishing much of anything? So, as a general rule is it the idea that when starting a new chapter, one is supposed to look over these chapter goal possibilities, basically pick one and try to work towards it, or is it also possible to play more "spontaneous" and the chapter goals are more superficial than required (if that makes any sense). Thanks.

Pull the thing is right so you is feel like your role playing no matter what choice your making during the formative years.

Try and see. Don't play "for stats"; imagine a character and play consistently with him. See what happens.

Well in this game “min-max” character is well-rounded character. He has most stats overall so he has most options, so he’s better. But it could be difficult to make one properly if you play for the first time. In this case you probably should just focus on raising main stat (like Nobility if you want to be a noble) to level 8-9, leave other choises to roleplay and you should be fine. The only thing that might ruin character a bit is if one of your childhood stat (Perception/Determination) is too low. They’d better be like 5/5 or 4/5.

I've found that min-maxing is a bad idea for this game.

I never min-max in games like this, since the entire point of the game is to roleplay as a specific character who has specific morals and personality traits. Min-maxing defeats the entire purpose of the game.
