Do i just exist out of game? I have just kept the game running in the background

Yes, just exit and it saves.

If you wanna backup your saves though you can copy them from (this is on my pc)

C:\Users\pinkm\AppData\LocalLow\SEVER\The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante\Saves
