So the community naturally hated this and they got rid of it, to their credit. The challenges were probably the dev's way of coercing the players into buying their overpriced DLC, as additional easy challenges would inherently come with the new weapons. Luckily, we were able to get this broken system overhauled.
It was a cool bonus. It wasn't forced on you at all, yet it helped progression just a bit, and it was satisfying to have them unlocked.
But for whatever reason, PAYDAY 3 on launch rewarded with absolutely ZERO experience for you to level up with, for completing a heist. If you didn't accomplish a single challenge during the heist, which could have been a 40 minute solo stealth attempt as a beginner, the game did NOT reward you at all for your troubles. You got your 500k money or whatever, and zero EXP.
And now, they decided to go to the other end of the extreme. Challenges are gone completely. This is bad. They implemented so many of them and they completely removed them. I wouldn't have minded if they balanced them out a little and keep them, as well as being able to properly earn EXP from heist completions, but no, they had to remove them all. Weapon specific challenges were fun in PD:TH, and might I say, they weren't really horrible in PD3 either, just grindy, and when grind is the only way to level up, it's annoying.
It's a shame they removed challenges, I really hope that they removed them just so they could rework some of the conditions since yeah many of them sound really tedious.
I'd figure the challenge system is a great replacement for payday 2's massive achievement list and compliments the progression system really well by allowing the player to get additional XP from completing the challenges.
