Challenges Removed?
Hi everyone hope you all are well.

I just bought Payday 3 and am somewhat confused about the timeline of events that took place between the launch of the game and right now.

I heard that this game had its progression linked to challenge completion instead of passive progression alongside heist completion. Does the challenge completion progression system not exist anymore? What happened to all the challenges that existed previously?

I have been enjoying this game so far though, the couple of heists that exist currently do serve real nice replayability to them and the gameplay/graphics are clean.

Thanks :)

Challenges are just gone, period. Save for ones tied to achievements, and the ones that give C-Stacks for level milestones.

Yeah, the progression used to be totally tied to challenges. Most of the challenges involved getting hundreds of kills with the weapons, killing special enemies in certain ways and most notoriously, requiring heists to be completed hundreds of times on each difficulty; they were extremely tedious and required a lot of grinding. The max level is 150 but even if you completed most of the feasible challenges, you could only reach about level 90.

So the community naturally hated this and they got rid of it, to their credit. The challenges were probably the dev's way of coercing the players into buying their overpriced DLC, as additional easy challenges would inherently come with the new weapons. Luckily, we were able to get this broken system overhauled.

Challenge-based progression is horrible and I'm glad they removed it

While I hated the challenge-based progression, there is essentially nothing to do or work towards now. I wish they would have kept the challenges and at least added some cosmetics or some type of reward, however minimal. This game feels even more hollow than before, and I really didn't think that was possible

This progression system was pointless because it was about, for example, killing 1,000 police officers with a particular type of weapon, so it forced you to grind that instead of enjoying playing with the weapon you like. In addition, I, for example, had the problem of getting paid for additional objectives such as carrying all the bags up the stairs but the game did not see this, in general. this system is, in my opinion, overkill whereas it is better for the overall fun of the game. However, the game as it stands despite the platinum and 110h I do not recommend.

The challenges themselves weren't necceseraly bad, and earning additional, BONUS, experience to level up faster would have been a cool thing. PAYDAY: The Heist in 2011 had this system. You leveled up from heist completions, but you also earned additional EXP for completing challenges. Many were simple weapon challenges, Bernetti 9 vs The Law, among many others.

It was a cool bonus. It wasn't forced on you at all, yet it helped progression just a bit, and it was satisfying to have them unlocked.

But for whatever reason, PAYDAY 3 on launch rewarded with absolutely ZERO experience for you to level up with, for completing a heist. If you didn't accomplish a single challenge during the heist, which could have been a 40 minute solo stealth attempt as a beginner, the game did NOT reward you at all for your troubles. You got your 500k money or whatever, and zero EXP.

And now, they decided to go to the other end of the extreme. Challenges are gone completely. This is bad. They implemented so many of them and they completely removed them. I wouldn't have minded if they balanced them out a little and keep them, as well as being able to properly earn EXP from heist completions, but no, they had to remove them all. Weapon specific challenges were fun in PD:TH, and might I say, they weren't really horrible in PD3 either, just grindy, and when grind is the only way to level up, it's annoying.

Thanks for your replies everyone!

It's a shame they removed challenges, I really hope that they removed them just so they could rework some of the conditions since yeah many of them sound really tedious.

I'd figure the challenge system is a great replacement for payday 2's massive achievement list and compliments the progression system really well by allowing the player to get additional XP from completing the challenges.
