Do you think melee should deal damage?
Anyone who uses the enemy health bar mod knows that meleeing a cop does no damage, just briefly stuns them. Just when you thought meleeing in PD2 is useless...

It really should do damage...

I guess melee weapons and thus, comically large spoon, are not returning.
Cryptic Sep 28, 2023 @ 2:49pm
yes at least to guards and cops and civvies (first hit fine then after kill)

but armored swat idk.

Considering there are no actual melee weapons, I'm fine with it just being an emergency stagger tool or attention grabber.

Yeah I hope they keep this game grounded for a couple of years before jumping the shark

I think they wanted to make silencers actually worth bringing instead of being able to just melee everything, but I wish there was a "Martial artist" skill that lets you immediately takedown a guard before masking up, as in it forces you to mask up after you grab them.

Perhaps, but it definitely needs to be made extremely clear that that's all melee is now, because I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if most people still think melee does damage, even if not massive amounts, simply because, well, it's still an attack.

I thought it did damage, because I'm an idiot that doesn't think about mechanics being removed from the previous game.

Who DOESN'T?! Besides the devs.

To be fair, though, there is one bonus to the current melee system I wasn't aware of until I saw someone do it yesterday: you can punch civilians. It instantly drops them to the ground so you can tie them up faster, it's better than shouting them down.

That can still work with melee weapons, too. Just make it so the first hit doesn't kill, like Cryptic said.
---
Alternative idea, in case the devs or someone are super adamant that oddly-athletic middle-aged men can't use knives or baseball bats: add a skill line that buffs melee. The CQC line doesn't do anything for melee strikes, so add one that does. Here's an idea I just came up with.

Pugilist

Left-side skill:
- Your punches now stagger enemies for longer.
ACE: You can melee while reloading without interrupting your reload.

Middle skills:
- Punching a SWAT grants you ammo, once per SWAT.
- Punching a tied law enforcement hostage during negotiation instantly frees them and drops an armor plate instead of a health pack.
- Punching a SWAT you forced to surrender instantly knocks them out and stuns all surrounding law enforcement for a short time.
- If you have EDGE and RUSH, punching a SWAT consumes both buffs and immediately takes the SWAT hostage.
- If you have GRIT, punching anyone gives you a small amount of health once every 5 seconds.

Right-side skill:
- Punching law enforcement in the head now does damage. (equal to a SIG 40 bodyshot, perhaps)

I like the idea of a melee skilltree, but that third perk is just stupidly overpowered, that would become a staple in any build.

The armor plate or the ammo? I think the ammo's pretty tame.

The armor plate is probably OP, but it's been bothering me that the negotiation says they drop "resources" but the only resource they drop is health. I guess it could be replaced by a stealth buff, though, since the whole line as I wrote it only helps Loud.

To my knowledge meleeing just pauses your reload, it doesn't reset it or anything. You think it's ace worthy?

That seems obscenely strong. I like the ideas of being able to instantly trade and negotiate for an armor plate, but maybe that should come from like consuming grit and trading a (heavy?) SWAT instead of a civvie.

Melee weapons do not exist in real life, so the game is realistic.
Knife stabbing wounds, or deaths, are a rumor.

Some new guy invented something called a Taser or so, but it doesn't do much.

The ninja and karate movies in the 80s and 90s had been cuddling competitions, actually.

I think being able to fully finish your reload during melee would be a gamechanger for the slower weapons. The others, too, since I think if you start to melee too soon after pressing the button, it actually cancels the reload. Seems to be based on whether he had taken the clip out of the gun before you hit the melee.

Changed it to say law enforcement instead. SilentWave pointed it out, too, it should probably just be replaced by a different buff.
