It's barely a sequel. I played a few hours early this morning, and outside of better graphics and a few minor changes / additions it doesn't really add much to the formula. I feel like I'm playing a slightly improved version of Payday 2 when it comes to gameplay and visuals, but everything else is uninspired. The heists for example are basically just revamps of Payday 2 heists.
When I play Payday 3, I constantly get the feeling they just didn't come up with many ideas for what to include for PD3. That might be a side effect of releasing so much content for the previous game.
Overall it's an alright game when it works. It's enjoyable I guess.
Stealth has been massively improved in my opinion, I didn't really like what stealth turned into in PD2 where it basically was if you got caught that was it, no second chances a good majority of the time so had to restart, but now there's deeper mechanics that you can take advantage of and skills to make it easier but not necessary to complete.
I like the improved gunplay for loud, the way the specials are designed are an improvement (shields having a weakness from the front for example), and the new Nader special basically makes the tear gas from PD2 into a dynamic threat instead of just fixed locations.
Not a huge fan of the armor system as it is right now just because I feel like in the long run everyone is going to run armor bags, because ammo and health is pretty plentiful and armor obviously stops you from needing health in the first place.
I have mixed feelings about the skill trees, some do feel really impactful and fun with a lot of synergy, but others feel pretty lackluster in either effect, build potential, or both.
