How to defeat the vagina dentata?

I've come across an answer on Steam that mentions shooting the "snake" until it falls, then an egg is supposed to appear from its mouth, which you have to shoot.
All I get when it falls, is some small tentacles near the mouth that are not affected by my shooting.
Any tips / tricks?

You shoot it when it's about to attack (red square appears). That staggers it and interrupts the attack. Do this three times and it should should get stunned, letting you hit its tongue. This will cause vulnerable nodules to appear along the serpent. I think you need to shoot 5 of them to defeat it.
