It doesn't have the same charm and magic of the first one in story and characters, especially at the beginning. It also requires you to progress a bit in the story for you to unlock side content, meaning you have less characters you can meet while exploring before they show up in the story compared to the first game. However, once you progress a bit in the story, the game starts to pick up in its narrative and the world opens up for you more, making your exploration more interesting compared to the very beginning. I'm currently hoping that it will get even better as the story progresses.
It might not be as good as the original when it comes to writing but it doesn't mean that the game is not good on its own! And it is definitely worthwhile if on sale!
Just note that the game doesn't have official Keyboard and Mouse support, so you need either a controller or Sui's Hack which add K&M input (this hack is quite similar to DPFix of the first game, where you can also improve graphical options with it).
And Speaking of DPFix, DP2 is way more stable than the first when it comes to the technical side, so you don't have to worry when it comes to putting up with glitches and crashes.
As a fan of first game I was mildly happy right after finishing it, but the more I though about it the less I liked it. Super laggy version on Switch was not helping.
Today I finished it on PC and better framerate didn't improve my opinion.
Each chapter starts with visual novel style segment that is plot heavy, but has almost no gameplay, I liked those segments the most.
Rest of the chapter is open world action stuff, like DP1, but IMO it is very fluffed up. There is a bad crafting system, where you have to find many random items scattered all over the map, get as loot from enemies and animals or from generic repeating sidequests. Combat is very basic and can be broken with crafting, I managed to be able to 1-shot enemies and kill bosses with reloading just once. They added many life sim systems, like getting cold, that are unnecessary. There are many mechanics and minigames that are not well made. And all of those minigames are forced into main story, so you have to do, for example, bowling to progress.
Side quests are mostly fetch quests, and story parts are not interesting or even tangential to main story. If I'm not mistaken there are only 2 quests that deepens important characters.
In main story there is a lot of waiting. So much waiting, that you can run out of stuff to do.
At least fast travel is not hidden.
