Legendary
Has anyone played through on legendary? Any tips? How does an overlord keep his minions alive on this difficulty?!

You just have to be good at timing when to call them back. It get's easier after you beat Melvin. And the best way to beat Melvin, from what I found, is to put all your minions on a guard marker near the door you come in. keep circle strafing him and watch for the animation where he swings his fork and belly flop. Learn to read when he is about to swing. Then, take two minions at a time and get them on his back. let them beat him until the jump off then call them back. Unless you get really unlucky, your minions should survive until he starts rolling. Try and keep them alive and once he stops get right behind him. While his back is to you, he will turn go the other way then switch directions, repeat. If you get it right, he should be stuck and not able to move. Send one or two minions on his back and let them hit him. If you are alone, like i was, just hit him once per direction. This will take a long time, took me 16-20 minutes to win on my ninth try. If you want to make your minions do more damage, after you clear out the kitchen and burn the cooks, keep going til you see Melvin's room, get as much minion gear as you can, then go back, put the minions away and warp back to the tower. Go back, and the cooks should be back and you have to free the read again. Repeat until you get enough minion gear to your liking.

In general, you can't play Legendary like you do normal. You have to take advantage of your reds, when you get them, and let them do a lot of damage while you distract enemies with browns. I haven't gone much past getting rose, yet. But so far, your best bet is to bait one enemy and swarm him. Don't fight seven dudes at once, run and keep your minions away. Also, grind brown life force in the mellow hills. then latter, your other colors via the area in your tower against the beetles of that color.

Just finished legendary.

You will lose minions. Make peace with it. It'll take a lot longer to beat, since you'll have to tactically approach enemies that used to be easy. Overlord + Raising Hell took me on the order of 25 - 30 hours, and I've played the normal game through twice.

The two most important skills are knowing when to pull minions back and knowing how to pull a few guys at a time. Using your greens and reds well is also key; Browns do a LOT less damage in legendary but greens and reds stay more consistent.

Some enemies, like giant slugs, you're just going to want to kite with reds. Fire, run away, fire, run away, repeat until dead. It's slow, but it works and sometimes there's no other good way to kill them.

Here's the way to kill the bosses:

With Melvin, don't engage him right away, instead circle around him so that your minions jump on his back. You'll probably lose some to his cooking fork anyways, but you really want to make it to his second stage with 5 - 10 guys left. You can smack him to death with your axe, but it takes a long time.

Oberon is relatively easy; you have a minion spawner there and just need to beat up waves of enemies.

Sir William is, IMO, the hardest boss in the game. The trick is to get past his first stage with a few blues left; then the succubi and second stage are just battles of attrition you can win. When his party guests surround you, you'll want to clear some of them out, but don't leave the circle yourself--if you do, they'll all attack you.

Goldo you'll want to do solo. Or rather, you can solo him pretty easily, so don't worry too much.

Khan is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but you can cheese him with reds. As a bonus, reds do really well against the ninjas, who don't have a lot of health but will straight up murder you in melee.

The Wizard is surprisingly easy. Use browns and greens w/ a few blues to keep your geared-up minions from dying. As long as you avoid his whirlwind you should be fine.

The Infernal Abysses are, on the whole, easier than the base game, especially since you can put them off until you have better gear / more minions. You'll want to get the harvesting helm from Heaven's Peak ASAP, but you don't have to finish it afterwards (I had to come back with more & better equipped guys). The enemy rushes can be hard, and you'll want to go into them with full mana & be ready to use your best minion spell when there are a few too many guys.

The small key to make it 15-18% easier is to lure them out one by one this way your less likely let minions killed just because they weren't focusing their damage on the enemy damaging the minion. Also don't throw in a bunch of minions in at attack because the enemies have heck on a amount of health and damage basicaly at the begging you are fighting halflings that have health and attack of a normal dwarf.

Also Legendary is supposed to give you the impression that your starting a brand new game and that is is incredibly hard at first.

If you know how the ai works it`s really easy even on legendary. Once you are in attack range the mob will slowly turn towards you and after his attack he repeats that which means if you are behind/side of a mob after he attack it will basically just turn around like a fool. Also for many melee enemys there is a certain range on which the ai cannot decide if it should attack or move (works especially good on beetles at arena). All of that applies to bosses as well. Also it is good to notice that a melee attack by an enemy will hit anything within melee range in a circle around him (even if you stand behind an enemy melee attack it will hit you).

Is there any benefit to doing it on legendary besides it feeling more challenging and taking longer? A different ending, perhaps, or extra unlockables or anything?

I saw a channel going through the whole game on legendary. And while some fights seems challenging and fun, bosses fights are just battle of attrition, with no strategy wathsoever. (I means, 20 min of kiting the boss isn't in my definition of fun)
