In general, you can't play Legendary like you do normal. You have to take advantage of your reds, when you get them, and let them do a lot of damage while you distract enemies with browns. I haven't gone much past getting rose, yet. But so far, your best bet is to bait one enemy and swarm him. Don't fight seven dudes at once, run and keep your minions away. Also, grind brown life force in the mellow hills. then latter, your other colors via the area in your tower against the beetles of that color.
You will lose minions. Make peace with it. It'll take a lot longer to beat, since you'll have to tactically approach enemies that used to be easy. Overlord + Raising Hell took me on the order of 25 - 30 hours, and I've played the normal game through twice.
The two most important skills are knowing when to pull minions back and knowing how to pull a few guys at a time. Using your greens and reds well is also key; Browns do a LOT less damage in legendary but greens and reds stay more consistent.
Some enemies, like giant slugs, you're just going to want to kite with reds. Fire, run away, fire, run away, repeat until dead. It's slow, but it works and sometimes there's no other good way to kill them.
Here's the way to kill the bosses:
With Melvin, don't engage him right away, instead circle around him so that your minions jump on his back. You'll probably lose some to his cooking fork anyways, but you really want to make it to his second stage with 5 - 10 guys left. You can smack him to death with your axe, but it takes a long time.
Oberon is relatively easy; you have a minion spawner there and just need to beat up waves of enemies.
Sir William is, IMO, the hardest boss in the game. The trick is to get past his first stage with a few blues left; then the succubi and second stage are just battles of attrition you can win. When his party guests surround you, you'll want to clear some of them out, but don't leave the circle yourself--if you do, they'll all attack you.
Goldo you'll want to do solo. Or rather, you can solo him pretty easily, so don't worry too much.
Khan is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but you can cheese him with reds. As a bonus, reds do really well against the ninjas, who don't have a lot of health but will straight up murder you in melee.
The Wizard is surprisingly easy. Use browns and greens w/ a few blues to keep your geared-up minions from dying. As long as you avoid his whirlwind you should be fine.
The Infernal Abysses are, on the whole, easier than the base game, especially since you can put them off until you have better gear / more minions. You'll want to get the harvesting helm from Heaven's Peak ASAP, but you don't have to finish it afterwards (I had to come back with more & better equipped guys). The enemy rushes can be hard, and you'll want to go into them with full mana & be ready to use your best minion spell when there are a few too many guys.
