Creating a Night Crew has been such a game changer
One thing I've done that's really just enhanced my overall gameplay for the better in the mid to late game is creating a night staff.

Its 3-4 teachers that all specialize in Dark as main and take Fire / Nature / Water as secondaries.

This allows them to all meet their Dark Wand need easily since they're awake all night, and they can perform all of the basic upkeep duties without a fuss as there are no classes or distractions.

Dark/Fire cooks and gets meals ready for the morning.

Dark/Nature tends to the Sporeshrooms and Unstables in locked off sections of the Greenhouse only they can get to, and is a Shattered so they can grab the Vines too

Dark/Water takes care of the Alchemy/Drinks, since Water Wand main needs to be my student teacher to satisfy their craving for group activities

Dark/Lightning was the last choice but it could be anything. But they topped off Wards, did the Quilting and then just Researched in the night (until it was finished, I wish they would have some kind of perpetual forever-research you could keep doing for some kind of perk. Maybe every X amount it generated a Relic, something high like 30-40K Points or more just to keep them busy and make Research forever relevant) but they also Divined up any lingering stuff as well.

The best part is, now if there's an emergency in the night requiring attention, I have active workers that can handle it without having to wake up everyone else. They can also perform rituals like Fog Pushing or Student Summoning without disrupting the day crew's schedule. Lastly, they eat on an offset schedule so I don't need additional dining tables for them.

It's been great and I think it's a game changer! If you don't have a night crew, work on getting it set up! Even just one or two staff make a difference!

Darks moonlight need can be filled by windows sleeping at night no? Or do they have to be awake?

If you hover over Moonlight and read the description, it indicates that the need pauses during sleep.

I should add that the Dark main element isn't REALLY necessary. Some of the Elements are "free" in that they don't really require much to function, primarily Earth and Air. You could just as easily have them as your night crew mains as well. I just chose all Dark because its cool :D

(But now I'm reconsidering it because I planned on having an Earth/Water tank anyway and he could just be my night Alchemist all the same)

The need is paused, but I read it as "the need is not degrading", I never bothered to adjust a schedule for my dark wand users and they never have any issues with this need, so it feels that sleeping under the windows actually fills the need. Or it could be filling while they are running last of the tasks and that is enough.

I like your mindset! You're both optimising and "roleplaying" at the same time! This type of player really loves games :D

Yeah judging by how many mage you can have at the same time, game encourages you to hire "spare mages" for such things. Especially for the late game Jabe Eggplant thingie. All this mages being dark is a cool thing in higher difficulties where you also have to keep them sane. Fire and Water needs may kill your mages if they're full-time cooking or brewing, ESPECIALLY when you roll Private tag for corresponding rooms.

You can also have dark mages fill two hours of tasks during twilight. It’s my default schedule and I haven’t noticed 2 of my dark inititates getting low on conviction. But then again they have a House Commons + honeyed Gruel.
