I haven't played through to that point since that update, so I don't know if they reverted the change or not, but there's no mention of a reversion in any update notes since.
The first time I did perform the ritual with 3 apprentices, but at the time I performed it there was a Wasted Event occurring. The Wasted Event prevented the Eggplant from growing (not surprising), but the tooltips suggested that the reason it was not growing was because it needed certain plants nearby (without specifying what plants). When the Wasted Event was over I performed the ritual again (the Gloom had overtaken my first egg; a new one had respawned) and this time the Eggplant was growing the moment the ritual was finished. It looks like the message about needing certain plants is left over from when the Devs removed that requirement.
If any Devs are reading this, it's a minor bug but probably should be addressed at some point. Thanks all. I'm really enjoying this game.
I played a ton during early access (around 400 hours) but then stopped to give them time to finish it, so I'm now back to playing it again after a few months of not. So much new and changed stuff it almost feels like a new game again.
I've just had exactly the same issue - glad to know what's causing it and I'll try again once the wasting is finished!
