That is wrong. Any light works. Each room has a light number to be considered lit that can be checked at the light overlay (F2). To avoid the voidshroom from spawning, you just need to reach half of that number. Worse light just means that it has a lower light value and you need to build more of it, but you can completely avoid voidmusroom from spawning with the default light that you start with.
Four wall torches in a room of 7x7. for example is enough. The problem of torches is not the power really, its that they give the room -2 luxury for each.
Braziers are just the ideal light source for every room. They are luxury neutral and they trhow more light than torches. But again, candelabra is even better than braziers... :p and that is what i put in all my rooms if the light color fits the room purpose.
As i always said, these games are made to be restarted over and over again, each time you are going to learn a lot of things, essential things, this is one of them. You will be learn things and restart another run with those learned things. And so on. I usually dont ask questions in forums until i played for at least ten hours straight. Many things you will not understand will solve emselves just learning for your own.
Early on the small rectangular window and small round window are cheap to build, and altogether good enough for your stairwells and workshops.
