Trials - what stops their completion?
What action is it that blocks a Trial from ever being completed? Is it:
1) advancing the wand level, which is what opens the next tier of Trial?
2) advancing the initiate/apprentice/staff position, in which case you should complete all Trials before ever advancing a mage?

The codex entry for this topic is very unhelpful. Wikis on the web don't explain this mechanic either.

The only thing that prevents a trial from ever being completed is hiring a mage to staff.

Yes, as mentioned before initiate/apprentice can complete trials, staff cannot

Advancing wand level just add additional Trials, and not affects on any Trial from T1 wand. When your Initiate promoted to Apprentice, it will get XP from all completed Trials again, so most efficient way - Summon Initiate, advance its wand to highest possible tier, equip maximum pissible relics, fully train Initiate (and complete all Trials) and promote to Apprentice. At andgame you can re-roll Trials (some trials need several days for completing, it maybe better change its for more time useful)
Trials can be completed by Initiate or Apprentice, but not Staff, so all incomplete trials disappear after promoting Apprentice to Staff
