Or at least let fire-apprentices cook easyer recipes, like rat food and so on.
One does not have to be a top-chef to makes slops for the beasties, I'd guess, or an easy soup. so they can prepare emergency-food too. There's a missed educational benefit!
Afterall: we do run a school ;-)
I don't know if quilted cooks are the right answer, but apprentices should DEFINITELY be able to cook, and there ought to be some other cool new thing that fire mages get to do.
Air mages make all the furniture, earth mages make the entire castle, dark mages make quilted creatures, lightning mages conduct essential research, nature mages make wands, water mages make potions, and fire mages... cook? Fire mages are nothing more than kitchen servants? Wow.
Fire mages should be forging swords and armor and cool stuff like that.
