I like the idea of students being able to perfrom more tasks based on their main magic. Kids aged 8 get on Masterchef, let the students at least cook slop and maybe gutberry soup and bitter gruel. Add 'burned -5 conviction' as a risk for letting a student cook, if cooking at all is too much of an upside to gamebalance.
Just consider the options for medals it could open up. They could replace the movement speed medals and integrate those into something more common, like a temporary mood buff from either food or recreation or anything at all.
One of the core mechanics of the game is that students only do basic tasks and staff do everything. Because the other point is to train those students to be your staff, if they could do everything the staff do what would be the point of the students?.-
I think you mean "what would be the point of the -staff- (if the students could do everything)"?
If so, one answer is that the staff can do -every- thing, and the suggestion is that the students could do -some- things.
A fire-wand student would be able to current-student tasks (haul, clean, etc.) plus the fire-related tasks (cook, etc.) But that fire-wand student wouldn't be able to do the water-related tasks or the dark-related tasks.
Also, that fire-student is probably weaker at fire skills than the fire-based staff member.
In that scenario, the advantage of a staff member is that they can do their speciality better than anyone, can do everything else as well, and (FWIW) they can teach.
The Staff wouldn't be limited to just doing the tasks dictated by their wands. A Fire Staff can do alchemy, quilt, research etc. While a Fire Student would be limited to cooking and hunting in addition to the usual stuff students can do.
Not only would this help offload some of the work that would normally, exclusively be done by staff like alchemy, harvesting, and cooking, I think it would help add to the school feel as you see students doing various tasks around the school that isn't either overshadowed by Quilted, like Hauling and Cleaning, or pretty much useless like Warding and Charging. Maybe even allow them to gain exp in those tasks to make it feel as if they're putting what they've learned into practice or taking up extra-curricular activities to hone their skills with their wand. Learning isn't just limited to the classroom after all.
