It's because the larger boxes are plots, not boxes. Plots can be walked upon, whereas boxes can't, regardles of size.
Literally everything done in this game is done by magic. "Any" item on the ground uses a wand from a good distance to be picked up by both student and teacher. "Any" item put away is done at a good distance using magic. "Any" action performed (chopping trees, cooking, building, etc) is done at a good distance using magic.
Soooooo, why does magic stop at a small wooden box? Why do the laws of physics and barriers apply here but not anywhere else? Yeah for you guys for accepting this, but I just find it not aligned with the game and find this mechanic, well... stupid. But I guess I'm alone in this thinking.
Perhaps we're thinking magic doesn't work with wood, after all witches were typically burned or tied to a log and dropped in the water to drown them. If that's true, then why are they able to chop down those wooden trees with magic? Pick a system and stay with it, it's all I'm saying.
Having a separate system for both does require separate code however, which is why gaming logic sometimes have to be accepted as it's often too expensive for the dev to get too intricate, but that's a different matter than thinking it should be that way. Personally I think giving wand and walk reach different code should be relatively cheap enough to do for a QoL feature, perhaps even negligible if they can apply the vertical reach to the horizontal reach somehow. So let's hope they get enough constructive feedback in that regard so that they consider it.
To put it as simple as possible;
The mechanic was explained, as per your question;
And in regards to:
No one said anything about whether it made sense, or could/should be different. I don't teally think it seems right to anyone. Except that perhaps the dev team think they have more important things to work on. I don't know, nor do I care. Time will tell regardless.
And I'm actually an employed professional programming department lead for a global fortune 500 company, so what?
