How do you level up mages or train them beyond their teachers?

For example I have a level 3 dark mage. I need level 4 to make quilted miners. How do I do this?

Their level cap depends on the wand level. You can sometimes increase the skill cap if you're lucky to have a character that has a trial increasing a skill cap, but other than that, there is no way to increase it further. The point of the game is to keep making better wands and use them to summon students. You shouldn't keep your staff/students forever.

Understood. Now, other than getting them as random loot is there a way that I as player can make this happen? The game doesn't at all make this clear. I like the game, but it is lacking in this respect.

through research you unlock level 2 and above wands from what i gather

In the research tree there is a search function, type in wand for example and it'll highlight which research unlock better wands.

If you don't have the tier II want researched yet, you can always summon a gifted student if you have 15 arcane and 15 adept scrolls and a staff member with a lightning level of 3.

I did get lucky once and summoned a student with a nature level II wand that ended up with level 5 nature and level 4 dark after I completed all of his trials

Short answer. You cant. Either you replace em with better versions, or well... thats the only option lmao. This is not a typical game where you level up your characters, dont go that way.
