As you hire more staff the requirements become more taxing, needing an assembly hall, a great hall, adept scrolls, and savant scrolls at a certain point. So you have to manage retiring existing staff and replacing them with newly hired students to keep the costs manageable until you can start producing tier 2 wands (to start getting savant scrolls) and upgrading your ritual hall into an assembly hall or great hall to access more staffing slots.
If you're to where you can only have four staff, just focus on the elements whose jobs you feel like you use a lot. I'd recommend fire (cooking and hunting), nature (gardening), lightning (research), and either earth or water. Fill in as you get access to more slots.
You're not supposed to hang on to staff or students, especially in the early game. They are there to fulfill a function until you need to graduate or retire them for scrolls.
I'm having a problem performing the ritual 'graduate with honours'. It's not giving me the chance to place a student although they have both fully trained and all quests completed. The room is an auditorium.
Any help ???
