Update, looks like indoor growing with windows works
Erm only walls do nothing. Already checked. You need a roof or floor on top. And if you only need walls, then im having a bug because my research thing and the wand thing keep breaking up. I placed another floor on top and problem solved.
Also of note, for fungus, there are some lighting options that give moon light. i think the first one you would get is the mana lantern you make with a mana crystal. This version of moon light is active all the time so your fungus can grow during the day as well. Same applies for over-lighting as above - if your room is over-lit with moonlight then your fungus will grow faster.
Roofs don't create a room unless they're enclosing an area that also has walls. (And probably floor/foundation, though I haven't tested whether ground can be inside a room.) You can build roof that just extends over open space, subject to the usual support mechanics.
Ahh that is a fair point - I figured "well outdoor plants also only get sun during the day" but continuous growing would be pretty useful.
