Build up from your foundation on either side
and then make a floor that goes further then your foundation slap a roof or a floor on top and just make the entrance to that room only from that side it branches off from
I'm not sure how you're intended to use this...presumably you have to let them out eventually. Unless you're locking the ghost teacher in.
You basically have the right of it. build the room and destroy the entry point with the occupant inside. Ideally the occupant is a ghost with a really good lightning wand. (Theres a reason the hermitage doesnt include a bed after all.)
The ghost has level 1 in all skills though. If the research rate scales evenly with skill (if a level 2 skill is twice as fast at researching) then by the math, it is pointless to throw him in there instead of just sticking your highest lightning in a tower, right? I'm just assuming the research scales that way, I could totally be wrong. I remember reading in another thread someone had suggested something along the lines of a teleporter at some point?
Alternately, it's not like the occupant can't let themselves out by building a 'hallway' whenever they need to leave.
Or if their conviction is really ironclad you could leave them in there for days with a box of food. They'd have to sleep on the floor and eat without a table, but those things are possible.
(And you are allowed to put recreation inside the hermitage.)
The ghost becomes more and more useless as the game goes on because of the low skillset, and also cannot go into combat. Might as well lock him in the hermitage for steady research progression and have your best lightning mage and a mage tower as back up. This mage might have a decent secondary skill to perform other important tasks before researching and will perfrom them faster.
Also, research is finite. You can go through the trouble of keeping your lightning mage happy while isolated, finish research that much faster, and you're done. I do appreciate the feeling players might get of getting it all done asap and getting the best items.
I wonder, what do people use the ghost for in the later stages? Because the only tasks that aren't hindered by his low skill can be done by quilted and students.
One space where it doesn't seem to have any disadvantage over most staff is rituals, such as summoning low-grade students for basic scrolls.
In my headcanon, I should retain him as a matter of honour and tradition. Keeping the ghost around to see the success we make of their once-doomed school, and to tell horror stories to those new students.

Stop saying this nonsense. The room is designed to take advantaje of your high tier researchers. If you are going to put the ghost inside, why bother?????? your research speed is not going to be higher than just the inferior version of the room with a tier II lightning mage LOL or even tier I !!!. People still keep missing the point. By the time you build the room, you just dont want to waste it, you dont want to put the ghost inside, for god's sake... thats dumb.
