Advantage very long range no drop, disadvantage low damage and possible over heat could mod it for limited ammo but no over heat. Could be a counter for any flying bugs when they are implemented in game another advantage good against unarmored targets. So it can sweep away drones, however don't expect it to down Grenadiers, Tigers and Infernos in a timely fashion

I don't think I've seen any of the series, games or movies use one, it's strange that they didn't make one.
Only one spaceship had lasers in starship trooper invasion.

Although with your description I remember a very similar weapon in the old starship trooper game, It was called the Morita MK4 rifle, however it was not a laser weapon.
It was a plasma weapon that had infinite ammo, It was more of a support weapon, really weak against special or armored insects.
Maybe as a secondary weapon?
