I would make power armor like...you know...the book. Verhoven can piss and moan in his bubble.
As a side to this I would make it so that the infantry would work in tandem with the PA's, make bugs that small arms cannot harm and requires agile combat platforms.
As for PA's, I think from a game balance perspective having them be exceptionally good at hunting down and eliminating grenadier bugs quickly would fit in well.
I dunno if I like the "in-mission drop" mechanic. Rocket Launchers are SO MUCH more powerful than every other weapon and power armor would be the same way. Passing or failing a mission could hinge entirely on if some knucklehead snatches the mega-power-up before a competent person does. Not my idea of a quality gameplay mechanic.
(my vote is still a separate mission type where everyone has it)
A full customization off main menu loadout page for mechs would be an awesome way to expand the game content.
Mechs should have bad maneuverability and traverse/firing angles as their main flaws. Essentially unable to take advantage of map terrain/constructions and weak at targeting enemies chewing it's feet. This would promote the teamplay concept of the game, where a mech basically require infantry support to keep bugs off them, so they can dish out the pain at chokes and mid to long range.
Selective recollection of the book, it would seem.
Also, movies had mechs called marauders in film #3. A lighter version of mobile suits more similar to the book appear in animated film "traitor of mars".
