I vote for jake busey.....Ace. He gets a command role and flubs it hard. Later it is offered again and he admits it is not the role he should have. He knows his abilities and his limitations, that is the kind of soldier you would want to have with you when things go sideways.
For those who don't remember...
He's the Drill instructor who train Rico and the others, throws a knife at Ace's hand asking everyone how someone could push a button with a knife in his hand and also willingly retrograde to private just to be allowed to be put back in the fight and then is the one who's successful at capturing the Brain bug by the end of the movie.
If we includes the animated 3D movies, I would actually hesitate between Dr. Carl Jenkins and Sergeant/Private Zim as my favorite in terms of originality & authenticity.
Sergeant/Private Zim is cool, but he's a bit of a cliche story-wise. Dr. Carl Jenkins on the other hand is that kind of evil-looking scientist-like guy that turns out not that bad, but still do stuff wrong ... or right. He's hard to understand and yet, every time, he's doing everything to help those who struggle at doing the right thing... and he always make the best of its results.
