Using the same old fetch gas/ore or bug wave mechanics gets old pretty quickly. I'm usually done in about 3 games.
during AAS I wish they'd implement a spawn mechanic where it's a horde of warriors spawning from a single cave exit or from around a corner to make it a bit cinematic. Popping out of the ground always seems like such a chaotic mess. - Which can be fun but they need to change it up more.
The idea of capturing territory is cool, if only it led to something more interesting that wasn't just building a haphazard base around some structure that needs protecting. Like, you could have a mode where you slowly advance across the map, taking points, on your way to a central hive where a brain bug is located.
You could also have urban maps where you need to rescue civilians and stuff and escort them to dropships. Along the way there'd be places you could set up defences to help those escorting the civilians.
And yeah, like you, I really wish the bugs didn't just spawn from the ground constantly. I saw something about bug holes on the road map, though.
My pet hate that, bugs spawning out of nowhere. The amount of times you run along, kill bugs behind you and it's then all clear. Turn around and Wack! on your back... like seriously.... come on... I just checked and it was all clear one second ago.
