Lumen Software vs. Lumen Hardware
Lumen Software performs way better. That has nothing to do with hardware support vs. software support. They are two completely different things.
So if your FPS suck, try Lumen Software instead.

Anyone know what the difference between the two is? I took comparison screenshots and can't tell the difference, but I get +40FPS with Lumen Software.

quote from reddit: "The two biggest differences are that SW traces against distance fields and HW traces against triangles, and that HW can evaluate materials at the ray hit, allowing for more accurate materials in traces. HW also supports tracing skeletal meshes. "

It's all getting too complicated these days. Shouldn't a game just recognise your GPU and set your settings. Some games I find the setting a minefield of options that I just don't understand anymore. I've played computers since the Spectrum 16k 48k but now I'm old, I just want to plug and play.

They should completely remove Lumen Harwdare imo. It makes no visual difference but the drop in FPS makes it unplayable for many

SSGI looks great and has the best performance. The lumen settings are for bling screenshots not gameplay. Visually there really isn't much difference between medium and epic in most cases past draw distance and textures. You can tell in side by side shots but during gameplay its far less apparent. Plus 'low' in a modern game was considered high or ultra just a few years back.
One thing I noticed using Lumen Hardware is that more areas, which would otherwise be dark, have some level of illumination. Maps, such as X-11 or Agni Prime seem brighter to me.

For example, I'd adjust the brightness level back when I was using SSGI but with Lumen Hardware, I can set the brightness level to default and it's illuminated enough to see around.

After the 1.0 update, I had poor performance with the Unreal upscaler but by switching to DLSS, the game became as smooth as it was before 1.0
