Being able to use the flamethrower like Boba Fett was not worth all the grinding.
I shouldn't have bothered to spend those long boring hours grinding while using the flamethrower. I can't really see much of a better use for it other than when bugs crowd the doors.

It was fun flying around and burning bugs as a ranger, but it's not very helpful compared with the shotgun.

how about 2 ammo types.
1 - slow burning - area denial
1 - fast burning - DPS

That would be a great idea but I want at least another meter of range. The devs said they had issues balancing the flamethrower for whatever reason so I have no hope for something like this coming soon.

I'd use it as a secondary on a Demolisher for base cleanup, but I don't wanna go through the hassle of grinding it. As a primary is almost useless. If it could get mastery from clearing corpses I'd bother, but only being able to hit melee bugs isn't worth it.

There is only one specific way to efficiently grind the flamethrower - play horde hard mode with boss bug modifiers and camp the walls. Focus on damaging the boss bugs at the doors moreso than the small bugs and let everyone else finish them off. I managed to get around 1k weapon xp each match. It was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring and tedious I don't know why I bothered.

You'd also have to play as selfishly as possible; forget about helping the team with a MG emplacement or repairs.

I propose to rename the second ammo type to napalm, as I would enjoy a napalm thrower.

napalm is sticky, slow burning is napalm.

i was thinkn of havn a thermite based alternative for added burning.
tryn t stay away from 40k n the like.

edit based on below:
Boba used flame as a secondary (or third behind the rocketpack)
so havn a flame secondary as napalm thrower sounds nice, still get 2 ammos that way.

Flame thrower as main weapon is just suicide. Only useful as 2nd for demolisher to have fun defending the base.

I mastered the flamethrower weapon in 2 hours in hive mode, each egg gives the same experience as a warrior.
you can get up to 2000exp.
or even 3000exp if you are lucky.
without even counting the other insects.
The flamethrower in this mode is the easiest weapon to master of all.
(And grenade launcher/Split shotgun any weapon with high fire-rate or AOE)

The problem is that you won't always find people.
In any case, the ranger has the advantage of having a scanner, that is a damage buff that the engineer does not have and its advantage of not dying so easily and regenerating health.

but yes, the flamethrower is not ideal for open fields, it works better defensively or on structures

Imagine the shenanigans a Ranger or Sniper could pull off if they had it as a secondary. God I hope that perk ends up being a re-enlistment reward

So, flamethrower level 10 makes it accessible to other classes? I've done this with the carbine. Does this apply to all weapons?

yes. Hawkeye primary on most loadouts.

It does apply to all weapons, however the Mk1, Peacemaker, and Emancipator are already accessible by each class. The only requirement to use a mastered weapon on a non-traditional class is that specific classes level, i.e. to use the Sniper's XXX an Engineer has to be level 15.

PMO also expressed a desire to have Grenade Mastery later on, too, so we have that to potentially look forward to. I'd love to use Chem, Scan, and Hi-Ex on a Demolisher.
