Is there a hard-coded maximum fps cap?

As the title says, I've noticed that, even with the framerate set to no limit, as well as my nvidia settings set to the same, I get at max 144 fps while I have a 360hz monitor. While I'm not complaining at all, I'm just curious as to if it's a game thing, or something is odd about my pc ignoring my settings.
