On playing with Artificial Idiot
To start with, I prefer diplomatic play over warplay. Mostly because I suck at wars, but anyway. And you just can't go diplomatic with an AI.

The AI does not like diplomacy. Unless you overpower them 1:3 it would reject alliances. It may be your ally but not let you open an embassy. And even then they will constantly break treaties and go to war.

The AI cannot be bothered to care for Needs. It is somehow not punished for that with usual population drop etc, and at least at Adept it generates Knowledge faster than Humans do, so say welcome to Crisis Ages unless you spend all your Culture on Eurekas.

The AI converts everything to vassals, making it impossible to play from 1-3 regions as I prefer, and even when they let us destroy enemy cities, the only way to stop this crazyness will be all-out war. In lategame it means you will lack space for your city. Also it seems they don't have a cd on making a Vassal into a Region, because once it managed to create a Region once every 3 days.

In general, I just wanted to vent after they dragged me into Plague Age third time in a row.

True, “AI” is a mess all over the 4x Space :)
Personally i prefer games that are more simplistic / balanced towards the abilities of the AI.

I heard a lot about the AI in https://store.steampowered.com/app/287580/Pandora_First_Contact/

Modded it’s supposed to be quite good. Never tried.

True, that lol
At least in Millenia you can play against yourself. Quite a fun way to try different mechanics while not letting the AI spoil your game lol.

About to move to Grandmaster after Master fails to keep up in research, and that's without Eureka use. Turns out, maybe Local Reforms shouldn't be granting added Culture to chain into more uses of Local Reforms. Even if that makes Culture costs rise faster, the amount of early game snowballing Local Reforms grants allows for a huge lead.

And that's with two regions in my latest game, which I'm about to abandon in the Age of Discovery as there's no AI player near my power level, research, or economy. I've led research in every age, without doing anything particular to lean research heavy like a paper to books engine, merely building most of the research buildings and using Local Reforms around half of the time its available.

The tiny Adept handicaps in no way make up for the AI's deficiencies that are likely intentional - there's an effort to differentiate AI through personality types, similar to most Civilization games.

That all said, the base AI is decent, its not as bad as say launch Civ 5 or Civ 6, and that's rather impressive for a dev team of their size. I've seen it do clever things in combat, like knowing it can rout a superior army that's low on morale. With some exploit/balance fixes and a bit of AI effort, I think it'll be in a decent spot longterm, better than most 4X games at least.

I do have to give props to the team for the work done on the AI it's certainly way better then the joke that is Civ 6 that was completely brain dead for an entire year

Is Civ 6's AI better now? I saw how awful it was in the launch period, and that was the moment I stopped giving Civ a chance, after getting burned by it and Beyond Earth.

I could see myself picking up the DLC on a deep sale bundle, but only if the AI is no longer a complete disaster.

It's not just this. AI needs work in prioritizing other building types and the use of improvement points. I agree with you get to age 6 or 7 the AI just cannot compete with a knowledgeable player and the base reason, I believe, is "infrastructure prioritization".

The first year? They never really improved the Civ 6 AI. Still can’t actually wage and win a war against a human or pose any threat. I still play Civ 5 because while the AI isn’t perfect it can at least field an army and keep you engaged. I’m hoping they actually pay attention to AI in Civ 7 instead of just adding system after system until it’s a bloated mess.

Still sucks at this point wait for 7 and hope they actually develop an AI. Part 4 and 5 had ten times better AI.
