Is this.......right?
So I have 4 soldiers, a machine gunner and a helicopter

Which was unable to defeat a knights, with catapults.........

Am I missing something, or is the end game units woefully underpowered.......

Open up the combat log during battle to see what's going wrong. I haven't gotten that far in the game yet, but the combat log has helped me before understand why I win or loose a battle.

Multiplicative bonuses can be fun. They probably shouldn't scale with tech level, though, and attack and defence should probably scale more. As it is, the high multiplicative bonuses versus X you can get in the late game can be either entirely useless or overpowered.

Depending on what National Spirits and Government you're facing, the knights could easily have triple-strength attack.

Civ faced this criticism like tanks vs spearmen, etc... and I forget how they addressed it.

I have seen some streams where the AI fielded modern units.

oh I see.....

Well that makes a lot more sense.

So in otherwords.....if someone has these 'triple-strength' knights then you can never invade them.....after all, they totally wipe out the tanks....

I mean, it sounds so stupid to even say it. Tanks........defeated by a man, on a horse....with a sword.

If that isnt immersion breaking Im not sure what is

Yes, years and years ago. Back in civ 2, when phalanx could defeat battleships at harbour.......

You would think devs would have a brain and ask how a guy with a spear can attack a battleship, like how a man on a horse.....can defeat a tank.....

tbf asymmetric warfare is a reality. The US armed with attack helicopters lost a war against farmers.

HP went from 10 to 100HP, solved it effortlessly

I just want to be able to upgrade my old and very experienced units like my Raiders. Why trash such venerable and capable units?

Leaders are strong and the AI uses them effectively. Also: attacking over river in hills hurts badly.
So just try to promote one of your units to leader and I'm pretty sure this battle will see you on the winning side.

Also consider the counter system: there are multiplicative boni up to 3 on attack against certain unit types.

Leaders give 10% bonus to attack and defence per tactics level.

ah I see now

A river.....and a leader, a great leader......can stop tanks and machine guns.......with spears.....

Yeah......not sure I understand how that works. Can you explain?

That was the premise of Apocalypse Now.
A mosquito brought down that great leader in the end.
