In order to 'defend' the AI here: Its quite likely that they would have declared war on you anyways at some point. Diplomacy depends almost exclusively on the Score Difference with some consideration of other wars/ enemies.
I hope liberation mechanics get put in.
The ability to give or just trade things including territory and resources would be great. Gifts rewarded with opinion for example, beyond the available diplomatic options.
I'd prefer a mechanic that could tolerate an enclave/encroaching area under some circumstances, but that is a little complex - not impossible.
If a territory was recently taken from an original founder or long term owner, taking it back within a modest time should not give (as much?) chaos or require (as) long for reintegration as taking a truly foreign space.
