How do you use fighters to attack UFOs?

I have a bunch of Supersonic Lancer interceptors prepared to deal with aliens. Problem is, I can't order them to attack the UFOs. Can you use them to fight off the aliens, or should I reload and prepare bombers instead?

I think Interceptors fight other aircraft. You need bombers to attack ground.

Yes bombers works but usually only make a small damage (unless some tech improves that?), so a mix of bombers and fighters to protect them. Still, it seems more efficient to use diplomacy to just down the UFO's/Motherships. For Alien ground units, they are pretty weak and most of your land units can defeat them with ease.
