They are tile improvements that use specialists. If you find your specialists capping in earlier ages, you can build laboratories with them and upgrade the labs later to super computers - but only if specifically chasing the age of singularity. Otherwise, leave them as laboratories.
Could it do with beefing up? Absolutely, but be prepared for folks to complain about how it needs to be nerfed just like they are with the AoR. Besides, I am usually more keen to get the current game finished and start afresh with the insights I gained from this playthough. But who doesn't like a good crisis? ;)
The only real problem I've found is the AI doesn't seem to really participate in crisis and particularly victory ages. It makes them a bit too easy, since assuming you've prepared the only risk you run is that the AI will age up before you complete the conditions; I've never seen it deliberately try to challenge for the win.
You are right about that. I just entered the age for the first time, not knowing what was coming at all, and I didn´t manage to get the win conditions of the age done in time.
Well, I would have, but at some point suddenly all other nations were destroyed in one turn, I guess the AI wasn´t able to deal with the special mechanics of this age. So instead of the victory from this age, I just got the lone survivor victory.
But depending on how you play and what kind of map you have, the age can have some challenges. I played peacefully on an islands map for example, and getting the few armies I had to the places they were needed was taking time, enough time to loose a number of unprotected towns.
And then there was the problem to find places to build the damn things, the older regions were full, and the newer ones just lost space due to the destroyed towns. And since I wasn´t sure if you just had to build the cores, or if they had to be operational, or at least needed supply with power, I was building them one at a time, making sure the regions I build them in had enough power to supply them.
And then the AIs died on me and it was over. Meh.
I do agree with @Faray though, it is a little disapointing that you just have to build ten buildings to win that victory, it is a little too simple compared to other victories I think. Would have been better if it would have been somewhat like the age of departure. For example, if the goal where to upload a program, and for that the cores had to be operational and would give 1 point per turn per working core and you need 100 points, or something like that.
Of course, the main problem of this age is that the AI doesn´t seem to be able to deal with it. I think that that is the first thing the Devs need to adress, because changing the conditions and making it a bit more challenging would be nice and good, but it wouldn´t help if it then becomes impossible to win this age with the intended victory, because the AI would always get wiped out before that is even possible.
I hope the Devs will change that and let us see the singularity units (not sure how they are called or what they look like since I've never encountered them) appear all over the Word and kill our low tech rivals in a few turns (not instantanly) so we could at least see what they look like and how they spread and kill the other nations.
Also, it would be better if the thing that needs to be produced to kill the singularites can only start to be produced once you are in the Singularity era, not before. Or else you can also instawin by producing more than what is needed before the Singularity era start.
If the other nations are more than 2 ages behind you (hence being wiped out by singularity) then you've already won at that point.
If you are chasing the achievement for the winning by singularity instead of the default domination win, then you can get one of your regions to rebel and form a revolutionary nation which has your tech level etc. Just guard that nation until you beat the Singularity - which is not by eliminating all their factories / robots. It is by researching and building the personality firewalls.
