always getting out paced late game
I can fly miles ahead of all the Ai, always being ahead in tech and everything else. but the last 2 ages they just fly passed me with no issue. I will be half way through getting the last tech to start the new age then I see they are 10 turns away from finishing it.
then when I finish that tech and try research it myself it says 15-20 turns.

not sure what I am doing wrong, should I be fully tearing down all improvements and rebuilding for purely knowledge?

also while you are here.
I believe I had some other bug where I created a religion, it was 80-90% in most regions but when I tried to build some temple or something it told me my state religion was no religion.
I had been building and spreading it up until that point it told me I had no religion.
is there an age that just makes everyone have no religion. I did go into the age of aether.

I believe the only time I was beating the Ai in research was when I was just a few turns from getting the next age when the Ai beat me to age of ignorance.
so I spent a bunch of turns researching not tech only to be forced into the age of ignorance.

conquer regions from the AI, it will slow it down quite a lot. otherwise it will definitely outpace you because it gets huge massive boosts to pretty much everything

it's always the nation on the other side of the world that I have nothing to do with

I will be completely dominating tech wise all nearby nations but it's the nation I can't reach that beats me.

You *can* outpace the AI, but it takes all 8 cities. I was in much the same boat for a few games, until I realized I failed to properly develop the later cities quickly enough. Also, make sure to make use of the tech boosts you can get. Culture is crucially important for a large part of the game. Don;t forget you can blow up artist to move the culture meter up in one turn.

ah so I need more cities. I always have a few but mostly vassals because that's the govt. I take. 8 cities seems crazy to micro though. hope that's not the only way

I'm a bit of a 'tall turtle' myself and it is possible to outpace the AIs with less than 8 cities if you prune them from time to time. It helps to generate a few more military experience points too which never hurts. I prefer to use military experience to creatre my armies so that mu cities can concentrate of producing the improvements necessary.

You can also build lots of outposts to expand your territory as you can eventually attach 3 towns to each capital which makes your regions huge.

You might want to consider going the Kingdom form of governement and grwo lots of powerful vassals as well.

What difficulties are you playing on?
I stay ahead of the research all the time and even if I research everything from the era I still am the first to advance to the next because the AI can't keep up even with their cheats on adept difficulty.

I've only played a few games and always on adept.

I played with 6 capital regions on adept and outpaced the AI in research by one Age in the late game. I always research every tech to get the benefits. I only killed one AI in early game which gave me their capital region and some vassals and half a continent (of a 2 continent world).

You can buff your science by using the culture power but also by certain random innovations. You can also build some knowledge improvements.

International Trade (enabled by sending envoys to AI nations) allows to import items which turn into knowledge or give XP. In late game I imported 3 Analytics for each region, resulting in additional 6 x 3 x 3 = 54 Knowledge per turn. I also kept some forests and turned the wood into books which gives Knowledge and there is a buff that gives extra knowledge per book.

Hmmm,
I think I'm going to livestream a new campaign on Adept with fixed RNG seed later today.
If no Mods objects, I'll post the link somewhere here and you can laugh at my ineffiecient strategy while I will still be steamrolling the opponent AI.
I think around 16:00 UTC would be doable.
