Upgrade the battle animation
I like the demo and it is great that finally there is someone who tries to break up the formula of this genre but still I think the presentation is important to make a game more popular, and the battles are really lacking, the background, the attack animation etc. there is room for improvement.

They could be completely cut from the game and nothing would be lost, I think. They're utterly abysmal to look at.

Yep... They're absolutely terrible, and remind me of graphics from strategy games I can remember playing on the Amiga, let alone modern games... Maybe it's just a place holder, but it looks so bad they'd have been better off removing it entirely for now...

For a little perspective, Call to Power II, a game from the early 2.000's, has a very similar combat style, with significantly better looking combat and animations...

Little small, but you get the idea...

yep. Combat is quite underwhelming. And gets frustrated as units seem to randomly attack different units. I had hoped for something with a bit of involvement, at least at Humankind, but no. But thanks for the demo.

I do agree that i wish we had more ACTUAL control what the units would attack or try to focus on.

Agreed - the pixellated graphics with hyper fast animations look like an 80s game or "my first animation" level design.

Not having control of units can work if done really well - any of you all play a game in the Dominions series?

Yeah, it's basically just giving animation to the underlying calculations that would determine combat in other similar games, so rather than just seeing units swinging at each other on the main map, for some reason we have this terribly animated battle sequence...

It could have worked -- it worked well in the Call to Power games, as I mentioned in other posts -- but this is just so poorly animated it would have been better off not there...

What?

You must have played some other demo, as the one I played displayed a random selection of unconnected systems from other 4x games, implemented in a worse way than the original systems. Only thing I saw that I was impressed by, was resource production chains.

I thought of Call to Power too, I played it back then. There is no excuse, because it is a matter of style, even with a very low budget it could look better.
